The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement has generated a lot of controversy, in New Zealand and internationally.

Many of our partner organisations and allies, like Oxfam New Zealand, have spoken out against it. They argue, in particular, that it will make it harder to end extreme poverty in Asia and the Pacific, further reinforcing inequality within and between states - and possibly standing in the way of climate action to protect the world's poorest people.

On the other hand, many other development organisations have remained silent, and some economists, political leaders and entrepreneurs have argued that it will help New Zealand, and the Asia Pacific region. They argue that it will bring big economic benefits to the whole region, including its poorest people.

Now, New Zealand has signed the TPPA, but not yet ratified it. Our Government is aiming to pass a new law through Parliament to ratify the deal.
