Pay Fair-trade Forward (PFTF)

Do you love coffee? Are you passionate about social justice and making a difference in this world? We have the answer.

Keep updated on Twitter as each of our chains go LIVE @P3Foundation with #FairtradeForwardDay and on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/p3foundation

On the 18 May 2012 we will once again be hosting the national Pay Fair-trade Forward Day Campaign.

At the beginning of this national Pay Fair-Trade Forward day, an army of volunteers will be heading into cafes that sell fair-trade coffee all over the country and buying a coffee. But – here is the difference – instead of indulging themselves, they will leave this coffee as a gift for the next customer!

This lucky customer will receive a free cup of fair-trade coffee and while the coffee is being made, the concept of fair-trade and ethical consumerism will be explained to them along with the real life benefits for the farmers in developing countries. They will then be asked if they would like to pay this gift forward to the next person – passing the knowledge on and thus creating a domino effect.

This campaign was run in both 2010 and 2011, with amazing results –last year in one café in Auckland the chain continued for 200 people!

Fair-trade practice ensures that the coffee growers receive the following benefits:

  • a guaranteed minimum price: providing them with enough money to meet their basic needs, and protecting the most vulnerable from often crippling fluctuations in the world market
  • a social premium: extra payment for the co-operatives to put towards community development in the form of schools, medical centres, better water supplies and environmental enhancement programmes
  • technical assistance: to improve crops, harvesting, processing, negotiation and shipping – also in access to social services
  • expectation of future orders: enabling the growers to maintain and improve upon these community development initiatives.

P3 Foundation believes that education is the key to empowerment, thus through the Pay Fair-Trade Forward campaign we are seeking to educate New Zealanders on how an action as small as deciding where to buy your morning coffee, can have a global impact.

Pay Fair-Trade Forward campaign also draws on the principles on which P3 Foundation was created – the energy and innovation of young New Zealanders. “I believe this experiment will be a huge hit because Kiwis are such a fun loving and generous bunch!” says Divya Dhar, founder of the organisation, “through the domino effect, you are influencing so many people, both third world famers and café customers.”

So, when it comes to your next cup of coffee, will you take the opportunity to have a global impact?

To be part of this national campaign, all you have to do is to pop into your local fair-trade café (see list below) on 18 May and buy a fair-trade coffee! If you’d like to be more involved fill out this form or find out more, email 2012 Project Lead Emma Wylie at emma.wylie@p3foundation.org
