Welcoming in our new CEO

2011 said goodbye to our founder and previous CEO, Divya Dhar, who left New Zealand for further studies in the States. We said hello to our new CEO, Shruthi Vijayakumar. We also welcomed our new Marketing Executive, Divya Hariharan and Communications Executive, Nurain Janah.

Message from our CEO

“Dear P3 Foundation Volunteers and Supporters!

P3 has had an exciting two years. Due to the passion, commitment and creativity of our volunteers we have grown, in size, reached more youth in NZ and we are now having a real impact on poverty through our development project in India. So thank you for all your support! 2012 looks to be a promising year. We’ve set our goals higher than ever. Our current projects are hitting more cities (watch out Dunedin and Christchurch!) and we’ve got a newly recruited development team who are working hard to reflect your thoughts on our project in India. (Keep watching this space for exciting updates!)

Looking forward to an exciting year of young people making a difference!

Thanks again,
Shruthi”

Upcoming Projects & Opportunities

P3 is taking the fight against extreme poverty to the next level in 2012 – and we have so many opportunities for new and returning volunteers. Check out the ‘Volunteer Now’ section on our webpage to find a role that suits you.

P3 turns TWO!

Founded in a Starbucks Café one December evening by a bunch of friends determined to eradicate extreme poverty in the world, our organization turned two years old in 2011. As we reflect on our journey from inception to today, we want to thank you, our volunteers – without whom we would not exist, and without whom the repeated and resounding success of our projects would not have been possible.

Last week, our birthday dinner celebrations marked a beginning to a bigger, better year at P3, with a team of volunteers even more determined to achieve our goal of eradicating extreme poverty within our generation!

Flashback; Highlights of 2011

Social Enterprise Competition (SEC)

With 17 semi-finalists, all teams in SEC 2011 worked diligently to develop projects to tackle one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in local, national or international communities. Under the guidance of their more experienced, Ministry of Youth Development trained mentors, 6 teams battled out on finals day.

Making the winning choice a hard one for SEC 2011’s distinguished judges, whom included; Sir Ray Avery, 2010 New Zealander of the year, founder and CEO of Medicine Mondiale; Allan Freeth, CEO of Telstra Clear; as well as Richard McGill, Associate Director of Deloitte NZ.

In the end, Rangitoto College took the winning spot, with their ‘Project RAINEX’; devising a plan to deliver clean water to a village in Tonga. The team has worked hard putting their plans into action and the tanks are currently on their way!

Pay Fair-trade Forward (PFTF) Day

This project is a simple, feel good way of bringing our community together whilst taking another step to eradicate extreme poverty. Last year, thanks to the efforts of fifty P3 volunteers, including celebrity supporter Kirsten Morrell, we had 2,000 coffees paid forward across New Zealand! Keep an eye on our website for how to get involved in PFTF 2012.

Live Below the Line (LBL) Campaign

In 2011, P3 Foundation took part in New Zealand’s first ‘Live Below the Line’ (LBL) campaign. We formed a unique partnership with Glenn Family Foundation to ensure that funds raised from LBL campaign would make a direct impact on extreme poverty. Dozens of P3-ers in Auckland, and across New Zealand, lived below the line for one week in August, spending only $2.25 per day on food – equivalent to the global poverty ‘line’.

Through our partnership with Glenn Family Foundation, we contributed the funds raised from our collective efforts – approximately $21,000 – towards providing sanitation, clean water, education and housing for one village in Darjeeling, India.

This year, P3’s Development Team is working hard to find ways to make a bigger impact on extreme poverty, as well as preparing for our trip to see the progress in India – learn more on our website.

World Changers’ Conference (WCC)

P3’s inaugural World Changers Conference was organized in 2011, bringing together 36 amazing and passionate university students for two days of motivating talks and stimulating conversation. The aim of the conference was to unite young world changers with Kiwi’s that have achieved success in their professional careers as well as contributed to society. In the space of a mere two days, it was clear that we had surpassed our goals!

We had the privilege to host some inspirational people, including Labour MP, Jacinda Arden; Founder of Life Education Trust, Trevor Grice and Auckland Mayor, Len Brown. However, they were not the only leaders attendees got to hear from. Also present were doctors and scientists, including Ian Bisset and Richard Faull; young change maker, Dan Cullum and district court judge and former attorney for the United Nations, Jonathan Moses.

It wasn’t all serious as we laughed, even danced, and enjoyed the scintillating company over kebabs and late night games of ‘Mafia’. In end though, we came away full of energy, renewed enthusiasm and a whole new network of World Changers!

P3’s World Changers Conference 2012, newly improved and much bigger, is coming up soon – contact WCC Lead to take part at selwyn.fraser@p3foundation.org
